DESCRIPTION:ELCA Truth and Healing Movement Reading Circle\n"Rarely\, if ev
er\, are any of us healed in isolation. Healing is an act of communion." -
 - bell hooks\, All About Love\nIn collaboration with ELCA Indigenous Minis
tries and Tribal Relations\, ELCA Coaching is partnering with Rev. Solveig
Nilsen-Goodin and Jason O'Neill to facilitate our gatherings on the secon
d Wednesdays of each month through 2025.\nWe will be engaging with a book
 written by an Indigenous author\, scholar\, leader\, theologian\, etc.: C
uster Died For Your Sins: An Indian Manifesto\, by Vine Deloria\, Jr. (Sta
nding Rock Sioux)\nWe ask you to read one chapter per month on your own\,
then we will discuss together during these monthly gatherings. (Chapter 1
for January\, Chapter 2 for February\, and so on.)\nIf you do not have the
book and cost is an issue for you\, please send a request to jill.beverli
 n@elca.org\n--- --- ---\nBonus learning:\nIn November 2024\, the Vine Delo
ria Jr. Theological Symposium focused on Custer Died for Your Sins: An In
dian Manifesto\, with presenters sharing their take on Deloria’s book. Y
ou can find those recordings here:\n"Red Power\, Black Power\, and Critica
l Race Theory" -- Rev. Dr. Robert O. Smith (Chickasaw)\nCuster Died for Yo
ur Sins Panel Discussion -- Allie Redhorse Young (Navajo)\, Rev. Manuel Re
tamoza (Cherokee)\, Professor David Martinez (Akimel O’odham/Hia-Ced O
 ’odham/Mexican)\, and Vance Blackfox (Cherokee)\n--- --- ---\nIf you fee
l called to facilitate your own ELCA Truth and Healing Movement Reading Ci
rcle\, please access the free discussion guide here.\n--- --- ---\nWe bega
n gathering online with faith leaders* in March of 2020 to wrestle togethe
r with Being Church in a global pandemic\, which transitioned over the su
mmer of 2021 to Courageous Leadership\, as COVID revealed our perceptions
and misconceptions about most things in life. We continue to discern wher
e Spirit might be collectively leading us as people of faith. Jesus is ou
r primary model as we move toward Creating Beloved Community: Healing Tog
ether to learn together and experiment in community with a variety of sp
iritual practices and focus areas.\nWe believe this is in attunement with
our call as Christians from:\n\nScripture and our expanding understanding
and expression of love for ALL of our neighbors\nMLK's Letter from Birmin
gham Jail and Vision of the Beloved Community\nWhat Is the Beloved Commu
nity and Why Is It Important?\nThe Idea of the Beloved Community: The crea
tive friendship of Martin Luther King Jr. and Thich Nhat Hanh\nELCA Teachi
ng\, and especially our "connection to all of life"\nELCA Living Our Bapti
smal Covenant\nELCA Truth and Healing Movement (facilitated by ELCA's Ind
igenous Ministries and Tribal Relations)\nELCA Ecumenical and Inter-Religi
ous Relations\nDr. Shawn Ginwright's The Four Pivots: Reimagining Justice
\, Reimagining Ourselves\nAnd so many other diverse voices and sacred ways
we engage with each other and with the world.\n\n* An important clarifica
tion: The coaching ministry defines "faith leaders" as all members of the
Body | "priesthood of all believers"| Beloved Community\, so even if you d
o not feel like you are a leader\, you are welcome in this space.\n--- ---
---\nTo answer some commonly asked questions about these regular gatherin
gs:\n"Why are you still meeting?" "Don't become too familiar with lonelin
ess. Community is a risk\, but liberation depends on the collective. Who c
an you trust to hold you?" -- Cole Arthur Riley\, author of Black Liturg
ies\n"How can I prepare?" Beloved Community members pay attention and lis
ten actively. We invite you to bring a spirit of curiosity and openness to
these gatherings and to all aspects of your life. What are you noticing?
Where is Spirit moving? How are you being invited to participate in the wo
rk God is already doing\, especially outside the walls of the building whe
re the church often gathers?\n "What if I'm not a group person?" Beloved
Community members take calculated risks. We invite you to take a small s
tep outside your comfort zone and allow yourself to be seen and witnessed.
We can almost guarantee that you will be pleasantly surprised by the lovi
ng\, caring\, and nurturing nature of community in this time together.\nRe
