Leading in a Multi-systems World (and Staying Healthy)

On Wednesday, May 25, we welcomed The Rev. John P. Martinson. His presentation provided a high level introduction to systems theory and then focused on key concepts of the theory that have particular value for faith leaders. Discussion included the nature of emotional systems, their roots in the study of family systems, the significance of our own family of origin in shaping how we function in emotional systems, and several key concepts around the importance of staying in touch. Participants were invited to reflect on these key concepts and how they have impacted their own leadership during the following small group discussion with other faith leaders.

In addition to his M.Div degree, John holds a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology and a D. Min. degree in Pastoral Care and Social Change. Before he retired, John served for 21 years as Director of Ministerial Health and Leadership Resources for Fairview Health Services in Minneapolis, MN. John’s primary focus was providing support to pastors facing the challenges of parish ministry. This support included comprehensive assessments, personal counseling and coaching through a program called “Clergy Coaches.” John was supported in the leadership challenges he personally faced through his own therapy and coaching. His leadership was particularly influenced by his study of family systems and his four years of both individual and group work with Dr. Ed Friedman.

We are mixing things up in 2022 as we continue to experiment and learn. You are invited to join us WEEKLY on Wednesdays at 1pm Central to hear from a variety of leaders. We will continue with our theme of COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIP. We have invited various ministries to host these gatherings through this year, so it will be different each week. There will usually be time for small groups in breakout rooms so that leaders across the church can learn from each other and leave each gathering with at least one action step.

We are inviting you to bring a spirit of curiosity to these gatherings and to all aspects of your life. What are you noticing? Where is Spirit moving? How are you being invited to participate?
